Description

These tropical carnivorous plants need warmth, humidity, and well-draining soil. Here’s how to successfully grow one:

1. Light Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal. A south- or east-facing window works well indoors.
Outdoors (during warm months), place it in dappled sunlight or partial shade—direct sun can scorch the leaves.
2. Temperature & Humidity
Nepenthes thrive in warm temperatures (70-85°F) during the day and above 55°F at night.
Ohio winters are too cold for outdoor growth, so bring the plant inside before temperatures drop.
Humidity should be 50% or higher—consider using a humidity tray or misting the plant if indoors.
3. Watering & Soil
Use distilled water or rainwater—tap water contains minerals that can harm the plant.
Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Avoid standing water in the pot.
Use aerated soil: A mix of sphagnum moss, perlite, and orchid bark works best. Avoid regular potting soil.
4. Feeding & Care
Nepenthes get nutrients from catching insects, but indoors, you can feed them small insects like fruit flies or crickets every few weeks.
Avoid fertilizers, as they can burn the roots.
If pitchers dry up, increase humidity and check for proper watering.
5. Overwintering in Ohio
Keep it in a warm, bright, and humid indoor space during winter.
Reduce watering slightly, but do not let the soil dry out.
